Psychological trauma is a process initiated by an event that confronts an individual with an acute, over whelming threat. The inner mind loses its ability to control the disorganized effects of experience and disequilibrium occurs. The trauma tears up the psychological anchors, fixed in the past which creates a secure emotional-state in the present. Therefore, the mind is required to reorganize, classify and make sense of the traumatic event.
When you able to integrate the trauma into conscious awareness and organize it as part of the past, then can psychological balance return. When the event has been processed and resolved, you can continue with your life in a comfortable way.
A person who suffers from traumatic stress will re-experience the traumatic event by flashbacks or recurrent dreams, acting as the traumatic event is recurring suddenly in the present.
Normally, every effort would be made to avoid thoughts or feelings associated with the trauma. In some instances, there might be an inability to recall an important aspect of the traumatic event.
Symptoms presented after a traumatic experience, maybe difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep, irritability or outburst of anger, difficulty concentrating, feelings of detachment and fear or estrangement from other people, restricted range of affect and in some instances, a sense of no hope for the future.
Intense psychological or psychosocial distress might be experienced and presented.
